About Kohala Coast and Lodging
Kohala Coast
The Gold Coast of Kohala is home to many of the resort communities as well as Hawaii’s Big Island vacation rentals. With several championship golf courses and highly rated beaches and beach communities, the Kohala Coast is one of the most coveted areas on the island.
Connecting this 40-mile stretch of coastline is the “King’s Trail” which was traveled by the ancient “ali’i” or royalty, as well as the runners to get pond fish and other staples for the Hawaiian royalty in Kona. The trail passes through the resort properties, Pu’ukohola Heiau and scores of petroglyph fields.

Hapuna has been consistently voted as one of the best beaches in all of Hawaii! If swimming, boogie boarding and great sunsets are not enough, the facilities include a small outdoor restaurant, BBQ grills and picnic tables, restrooms, showers and changing rooms and covered picnic shelters. Take Highway 19 North to the Hapuna Beach Exit.
Puako
Puako is a small unique beach community located on the Kohala Coast of the Island of Hawaii. The beaches along Puako Beach Drive are a combination of lava rocks and sand. Divers, swimmers and snorkelers can walk carefully out over the rocks for some great deep water swimming and Hawaii scuba diving. For the little ones, the tidal pools make for some fun exploring in the shallow waters teaming with minnows. The sand crabs are comical to observe as they burrow into the sand. Divers will enjoy some of the best diving spots on this coastline. Beaches are accessible in front of our beachfront rentals and by public accesses conveniently located along Puako Beach Drive. Look for the blue Beach Access signs.
Kohala Ranch
Imagine vacationing amid rolling acres of treasured Big Island land-where tradition has paved the way from one era to the next-from Hawaiian gods to cattle barons and now to those with a lust for enjoying the lifestyle they truly can. While time has brought changes to the history-rich Kohala area, the simplicity of nature and wide open spaces have been preserved at Kohala Ranch. The neighboring resorts on the coast offer tennis, Big Island golf courses and fine dining. While horseback riding, deep sea fishing, beaches and scuba diving are within 10 minutes drive of these individual ranch homes. All homes are located on three or five acres gently rising from the coastal roadway just above the seashore to the cool tapestry of green meadows and rolling hills. Kohala Ranch truly offers a climate and terrain to suit every taste with the amenities of luxury resorts and white sandy beaches just minutes away.
Waikoloa Village
Nestled in the foothills of Mauna Kea, overlooking the Pacific Ocean, Waikoloa Village is a small residential community. It is conveniently located close to numerous Kohala Coast resorts and beaches. The community consists of homes and condos, several restaurants, a grocery store, bank, gas station and small variety shops at the intimate shopping center. The community is wrapped around the award winning Robert Trent Jones Jr., course which boasts great golf at reasonable prices. Guests at our Waikoloa condos will be treated to special reduced rate at the local course. A spacious community lap pool and tennis courts are available for use with a guest pass provided by the Waikoloa Association. Weather is generally sunny and warm year round with very little rain fall recorded. During strong trade wind months, it can get rather windy in the Village, but rain is minimal year around. Neighborhoods and condo complexes are protected by codes and restrictions which limit pets, occupancy, cars and outdoor nuisances, so you can be assured of a quiet stay in the clean and modern village.
